The Maroons traveled to Chelmsley Wood for a cup double header, and I must say, Simon and I were immensely proud of the boys. Although we lost the first game to Chelmsley, the reason was crystal clear: an outstanding goalkeeping display. Despite relentless shots from the Maroons, including Jesse’s impressive attempt from outside the box, which was thwarted by an incredible save.
As we restarted, we were positive a win was coming but fate was to deal us a harsh blow. Maroons committed men forward, searching for that killer punch, but somehow, we managed to concede three late goals conceded in the final two minutes. It left Austin and Jesse in tears, and my heart went out to them, given the immense effort they put in. Daniel (GK), Charlie, Josiah, and Austin should hold their heads high; I was delighted with their performance.
In the second game, we faced the Minors again and we shuffled the lineup. This time, Jesse was in goal, with Nico, Lucas, Daniel, and Seb on the field. Did the change in personnel lift our broken morale? Hell yeah! They delivered a spectacular performance. Lucas had his standout game in a Maroon and Blue shirt, with Seb tirelessly leading the line. Nico added another goal to his tally, and Daniel provided stability at the back. Our dominance was such that Jesse spent most of the game venturing halfway up the pitch. Maroons walked away with a comfortable win and a clean sheet.
Jimmy Greaves said football was a funny old game and he was right. me and he was right.
